Why Telstra?

If you're ready to jump to a new broadband plan - and only the best will do - there's a reason why Telstra is still Australia's biggest telco. Although the company isn't the best option for more budget-conscious customers, if you're after quality, reliability and speed, Telstra has plenty to offer.

In addition to its existing ADSL2+, cable, and mobile broadband options, Telstra also provides fixed line NBN service. Overall, subscribers can pick from 80 different plans across multiple technologies, with data options available from 1GB (on mobile broadband) up to unlimited.

For NBN customers, current speed options include Standard Evening Speed (aka NBN 25), or Standard Evening Plus Speed (NBN 50). While both these provide great speeds for everyday and household use, it does mean that Aussies wanting the absolute fastest connection (NBN 100, or Premium Evening Speed) will need to look elsewhere.

If you're commitment-phobic, you can sign on for most plans on a casual basis, although you won't have access to unlimited data or TV and entertainment bundling. Otherwise, you'll need to sign up for a 24-month contract term, but you will get an included modem (worth up to $168).

Types of Telstra plans

NBN

Sign up with Telstra NBN on a contract, and you can pick between two speed tiers: Standard Evening Speed (NBN 25), or Standard Evening Plus Speed (NBN 50). More info about NBN's speed options is available here, but if you're a heavy user or have multiple household members, you'll probably prefer a Standard Evening Plus plan.

The actual technology you'll use depends on your location, so you won't need to make that decision yourself. You will, however, need to decide how much data you'd like each month: Telstra offers NBN plans with 100GB ($70 per month), 1000GB (from $80 per month) and unlimited data (from $99 per month).

Once you've worked out your data and speed preferences, you'll have the option of bundling your NBN plan with additional services, including Telstra TV, Foxtel from Telstra, and Foxtel Now. While a standard unlimited data NBN plan is priced at $99 per month, an Entertainment Plus bundle - with either Foxtel Now or Foxtel from Telstra, and Telstra TV - will set you back $130 monthly on a 24-month plan.

All Telstra plans include pay-as-you-go phone calls, with the exception of the aforementioned $130 Entertainment Plus bundle in which calls are included and unlimited (including international calls to 35 countries).

If you'd like to enjoy Telstra NBN, but don't want to lock yourself in, you can also sign on for a month-to-month casual plan. Be aware, however, that you'll pay more at sign-up, as these plans include a $120 'casual fee', plus any other connection charges that may apply.

ADSL2+ and cable

If the NBN hasn't made its way to your area yet, you can instead sign up for Telstra's cable or ADSL2+ plans where available - more info on how these plans differ from the NBN is available here.

Monthly pricing begins at $70 for 100GB of data on both ADSL2+ and cable connections, for both contract and no-contract plans. If you're after unlimited data, pricing starts at $99 per month (again, both for cable and ADSL2+ plans). Middle-ground data plans of 1000GB are priced at $80 for both connection types.

Mobile broadband

Telstra also offers smaller mobile broadband plans, starting at a low $15 per month for 1GB of data. Right now, plans are available up to 80GB for $150 per month (as part of Telstra's bonus data offer), and you can choose from either a 12 or 24-month contract.

Depending on your plan, you'll also get unlimited use of Telstra Air Wi-Fi, and 200GB of free OneDrive cloud storage.

How to switch to Telstra

To find out if you're eligible for an Telstra NBN plan, first check your address in our broadband search engine. If your home is covered by Telstra, all available plans will be listed in the search results.

Decide on the right plan for you, then contact Telstra either online or via phone. Telstra will help you to organise an installation date and time, plus take care of transferring any current broadband plan you may have over to their own NBN service.

If you already have an NBN connection with another provider, that's no problem - simply follow the same steps as above, by contacting Telstra and arranging a service transfer.

All new Telstra home broadband plans attract a $99 connection charge. For customers signing up for NBN, ADSL2+ or cable, standard installation is provided by Telstra if it's determined professional installation is 'mandatory' at your home; otherwise, you can setup your own modem/gateway free of charge once your house is connected.

Another important thing to note: while NBN installation is free for most customers (excluding the upfront costs you'll pay on a month-to-month plan), if you're located in a newly developed area with no existing telecommunications infrastructure, you may be charged a $300 New Development Fee by NBN Co.

How fast are Telstra's NBN plans?

Telstra currently sells plans configured on two NBN speed tiers: Standard Evening Speed (NBN 25), and Standard Plus Evening Speed (NBN 50). You can find more information on NBN speeds here.

What are my data options?

Unlimited data is available on Telstra's, NBN, ADSL2+ and cable plans, but there are also 100GB and 1000GB plan options for customers with smaller data needs.

Do I need to buy a new modem to sign up to Telstra?

If you already have a NBN-ready modem or router that is suitable for your technology type, you may be able to use it with your plan; however, some NBN services require a new modem.

Contract customers will receive this ready-to-go modem free at installation, but if you're on a month-to-month plan, you'll need to pay $89 upfront.

What happens if I want to cancel my Telstra NBN plan?

If you're on a no-contract Telstra plan, you're free to cancel or switch at any time without penalty. If you've signed up on a 24-month deal, you're still able to switch plans whenever needed, but you'll incur a $29 plan change fee if you jump to a cheaper plan.

If you want to break your two-year contract, you'll need to pay a fee of $100 to $300, with the exact cost depending on how much time you have left in your agreement. The earlier you cancel your plan, the more you'll have to pay iiNet to leave.

Do I own my Telstra TV box?

Whether you buy it outright, or you're on a 24-month plan that includes Telstra TV, your set-top box is yours to keep (even if you cancel service early).

Do Telstra's internet plans include calls?

Telstra's broadband plans include a phone line at no extra cost. Depending on your tier of plan, you'll either get pay-as-you-go calling, or included standard Australian landline and mobile calls, plus included standard calls to landlines in 35 countries (and mobiles in 17).
