Broadband bundles typically include something more than just a basic internet connection. In the case of Telstra, it tends to be related to Foxtel, but as of late, the company has also introduced smart home options.
Telstra offers three main types of bundles. They are as follows:
These bundles are available over ADSL, NBN, and cable. Unlimited calls can be added on to each plan for an extra $10 per month. Otherwise, calls are pay as you go.
On top of your broadband connection, Telstra's Home Internet Entertainment Bundle gets you a second generation Telstra TV set-top box and three months of free access to a Foxtel Now Starter pack.
Telstra TV is Telstra's take on a set-top box. It plugs into your TV via a HDMI cord, and has access to apps for Netflix, Foxtel Now, Stan, and every Australian catch-up TV service. The second generation Telstra TV - which is the one currently included in bundles - has support for 4K HDR content, free-to-air integration, and universal search across apps.
Foxtel Now is Foxtel's take on a streaming service. In addition to providing Netflix-style on demand content from Foxtel channels, you're also able to tune into "live" Foxtel channels using your internet connection. This is especially relevant if you're hoping to enjoy the service's sport offering.
While other streaming services available in Australia give you access to all of their content regardless of how much you're paying, the shows and movies you're able to watch on Foxtel Now depend on what channel packs you subscribe to.
You'll get three months of free access to one Foxtel Now Starter pack with Telstra's Home Internet Entertainment Bundle. You pick from Pop, Drama, or Kids. They include the following channels:
All starter packs also include Fox News, Sky News, Sky News Business, Sky News Weather, V, TVSN, and Fox Sports News.
Telstra's Smart Home Internet Bundle has the same fundamentals as the Home Internet Entertainment Bundle, but comes with a couple of extras. These include a Google Home Mini smart speaker, and a choice of a Telstra Smart Home Starter Kit. You can pick from these:
These kits can then be expanded with other items in Telstra's smart home range, such as light bulbs.
Telstra's Home Internet Entertainment Plus bundle gives you either two years of Foxtel Now or two years of Foxtel from Telstra on top of your unlimited broadband connection.
While Foxtel from Telstra might technically be worth more in pure dollar value, we'd suggest going for Telstra TV and 24-months of Foxtel Now instead. The Foxtel from Telstra package included with the Home Internet Entertainment Plus bundle is only a basic set of Foxtel channels, and you'll need to pay any extra for premium content like HBO shows or Sport.
While you'll still need to pay extra to add on Sport to your Foxtel Now subscription, the starter packs include premium channels such as Showcase which would cost you a further $20 per month on Foxtel from Telstra. You're also looking at extra $10 per month if you want to watch in high definition, which high definition is a standard feature on Foxtel Now.
The only time we'd suggest going with Foxtel from Telstra over Telstra TV and Foxtel Now is if your internet connection won't be fast enough to stream high quality video reliably.
The one other drawback of opting for Telstra TV is that you won't be able to record free-to-air TV. While the iQ3 doubles as a PVR, the Telstra TV does not.
While two years of Foxtel Now or two years of Foxtel from Telstra might seem like a nice bonus, the Telstra Home Internet Plus bundle doesn't represent good value.
The Telstra Home Internet Plus Bundle costs $31 more per month than the standard Home Internet Bundle. If you pick Foxtel Now, you're getting a product worth $15 per month. If you pick Foxtel from Telstra, you're getting a product worth $26 per month. No matter what you choose, you're paying more than the bundled product is worth.
The Telstra Home Internet Plus and Home and standard Home Internet Bundle are identical otherwise.
